Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, the province is distinguished by its coastal regions and its many waterways, which provide it with access to an aquarium of fresh fish and local seafood, from both freshwater and salt waters. On the road to vacation, here is a far from exhaustive list of fishmongers in Quebec that are worth the detour!
Gaspesie
Surrounded by the river, the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Chaleur Bay, Gaspésie is a destination of choice for consumers of fish, crustaceans and molluscs. At the far end, at the tip of the peninsula, the family business Les Pêcheries Gaspésiennes has been a staple in the field for 40 years. In addition to its fresh marine selection, the fish shop, which is Fourchette bleue certified since it undertakes to offer a minimum of two species present in its annual eco-guide, offers, among other things, Gaspé Cured cod, a salted and dried fish on outdoor vines, a local specialty recognized worldwide.

In the Baie-des-Chaleurs region, Poissonnerie Carleton offers its gourmet clientele a plethora of fresh, frozen, smoked, salted, marinated and processed products, the supply of which varies according to the season. Attached to the fishmonger, the bistro-canteen Le Frigidaire promotes these fish and seafood through comforting dishes — seafood poutine, fish and chips, mussels and fries, etc. — to enjoy on the terrace or to take away.

North Coast
With 1,300 kilometers of coastline, the North Shore is a region rich in seafood. Also certified Fourchette bleue, the Manicouagan Fishery offers a wide range of species in its four fishmongers located in Les Escoumins, Baie-Comeau, Portneuf-sur-Mer and Saguenay. It is, for example, possible to obtain snow crab, fished sustainably in the St. Lawrence until June, Atlantic halibut or Stimpson’s surf clam, this mollusc less delicate and sweet taste that is harvested until October. A catering service is offered at the Poissonnerie Les Escoumins, allowing locals and tourists alike to enjoy a Stimpson’s surf clam chowder, a crab roll or a two-salmon tartare.
