War in Ukraine: new recruits on the front line
On the Ukrainian front, the lack of men is starting to become serious after more than two years of conflict.
(FRANCE 2)
A France 2 team was able to go to the front, near Lyman (Ukraine). While President Zelensky has been talking about the lack of soldiers for several weeks, new recruits are finding themselves in combat, as close as possible to the enemy.
On the Ukrainian front, the lack of men is starting to become serious after more than two years of conflict. “Everyone wants to be lifted up, to see and hug their family”, confides a soldier. A France 2 team was able to spend a day on the front line, in the forest of Serebriansky located in the east of the country, while the outcome of the war in Ukraine is being played out in the trenches, where the soldiers are shielding their bodies. Here, the danger is constant, soldiers regularly try to shoot down drones. The vast majority of men in the trenches have been mobilized since the start of the war and weariness is felt.
The army is struggling to recruit new soldiers, while recruitment centers are multiplying across the country. Some, however, have just arrived on the front line. Major Victor, who arrived just two days ago, consolidates the positions: “I think I’ll stay a little while, this war is not going to end anytime soon”he despairs, evoking his family’s concern to know he is in this region of Lyman, under the fire of Russian bombings.
