Under a deluge of fire, in Bakhmout (Ukraine), Ukrainian soldiers are still resisting the Russians. On the front line, doctors and nurses recover the wounded from the battle. On the spot, they practice emergency first aid, often amputations, before joining the field hospitals. A year ago, Andriy was a plastic surgeon. “I love my country, so it’s normal that I stay here”says this Ukrainian volunteer doctor, Monday, March 27.

“You have to try not to feel anything”

But the price to pay is heavy. The fierce resistance of the Ukrainians in Bakhmut cost the lives of many soldiers. Lina, a 25-year-old nurse, sees dead people every day. “When you lose a companion, the first time, you feel really bad. Now, in most cases, I manage to control my emotions. You have to keep a cool head and try not to feel anything”, she says. According to Western estimates, nearly 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed or injured over the past year.
