This former boss of France 2but also of RTBF (Belgian national channel, editor’s note) reveals that, behind the scenes, he received on several occasions “the orderto lose”the competition ! A revelation that is already causing a stir! Faced with host Mélanie Taravant, this channel president develops: “The problem is that if you win, you’re the one organizing the year after,” he announces, evoking a figure of “20 to 25 million euros” to be spent on the television channels which have to organize the event. “The channels do not have this money, except in small countries where it is the Ministry of Tourism which finances, so that the competition organized by the European Broadcasting Union is a good showcase for the country ”, he explains. Yves Bigot, on his momentum, specifies to his taken aback interlocutors: “When I was at France 2, I had orders to lose and when I was at RTBF, I had orders to lose”. He admits that the RTBF “had to lay off 2,000 people after winning Eurovision”, in order to have the necessary funds to organize the event the following year. In 1998, when he was director of the variety, games and entertainment unit of France TV, he had according to him “the girl to win” but had heard himself say: “You’re crazy, if you win you’ll be fired!”
