Algeria celebrated, Tuesday, July 5, the 60th anniversary of its independence. A celebration under the sign of national unity which does not completely forget the internal tensions and a still painful past.
Tuesday, July 5, Algeria celebrated 60 years of its independence, officially acquired in 1962 after 132 years of French colonization and eight years of war. A vast two-hour military parade took place for the occasion, featuring soldiers, armored vehicles and fighter planes. A demonstration of national unity in the presence of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, after the popular demonstrations of the Hirak (Movement) which had tried, from 2019 to 2021, to dislodge the political class in place without success.
Four months after the Evian Accords of March 18, 1962, Algeria gained independence. The event was synonymous with liberation, but also flight for the pied-noirs forced to leave the country and for the harkis engaged in the French army. An epilogue whose scars are still present in relations between France and Algeria.
