Marseille can no longer afford to let points go. OM remains in two draws in the Europa League, spectacular encounters at Ajax Amsterdam (3-3) and against Brighton (2-2), but not entirely reassuring, nor interesting from an accounting point of view. Enough to make the reception of AEK Athens, Thursday October 26 (kick-off 6:45 p.m.), a little more crucial still. The Greek team leads a very open and undecided Group B. A success could fully launch the Marseille season on the European scene.

It could also chase away the painful memories of elimination as soon as Marseille entered the competition in qualifying for the Champions League earlier this season, against another Greek club, Panathinaikos, winner on penalties at the Vélodrome. Gennaro Gattuso’s players will have to show more defensive solidity, after notably wasting a two-goal lead in the second half against Brighton. OM’s schedule leaves no room for slackness, with then two other very important matches at home in Ligue 1, against another sick team, Lyon, on Sunday October 29, then against Lille, currently 4th in the championship, a week later. A success against AEK to finally restart the machine?
