In the aftermath of the knife attack which left six injured including four young children in Annecy (Haute-Savoie), government spokesman Olivier Véran denounces Friday, June 9 the “unhealthy game” right and extreme right “while we are in the time of emotion and shock”. “There are legitimate questions”he recognizes all the same while Les Républicains and the National Rally make the link between immigration and this attack, but “It is not the moment” to ask them, according to him.

Olivier Véran denounces “the controversy that some have tried to initiate”. “There are kids who are still in the operating room”he recalls, specifying that, according to his information “not stabilized”, “there would still be two children considered in absolute urgency”.

“We are all looking for answers and they will have to be given when the time comes”, continues the government spokesperson. “The individual arrested after the attack is still in police custody and is due to undergo a psychiatric examination Friday morning. “He must be questioned by the police and justice in a republican operation to understand thingsexplains Olivier Véran. Investigators are also doing their work across Europe to try to understand the background of this individual. We will need transparency, but once we have done this preliminary work.”

In this context, the government spokesman wanted to take precautions before discussing the immigration bill. “We need to legislate on the question of immigration and integration, but I voluntarily dissociate it from what happened yesterday.” He nevertheless reaffirmed the “need to reform the law”also at European level after “an important European decision” was taken on Thursday “to better harmonize the distribution of those arriving in the European Union” : “On our project, I repeat, what we are aiming for is to expel people who have received an obligation to leave French territory, to respond more quickly to all those who apply for asylum but who have not not destined to obtain it, and to allow those who are destined to stay to be able to work faster, especially in jobs in tension.
