He was elected by 40 votes to 20. The deputy for Eure-et-Loire, Olivier Marleix, was chosen to lead the Les Républicains group in the National Assembly on Wednesday June 22. He faced Julien Dive, young elected 37 in Aisne. He therefore takes over from Damien Abad, who joined the camp of Emmanuel Macron. Unlike Julien Dive, who embodied a more social right, Olivier Marleix represents a hard right line within his party.

Son of former minister Alain Marleix, Olivier Marleix has been a deputy since 2012. President of the Republicans of Eure-et-Loir since 2016, this representative of the conservative wing of LR had sponsored Laurent Wauquiez in 2017 in the race for the head of the party, then Michel Barnier in the primary of 2021.

He had already been a candidate for the presidency of the group in 2019 and had been beaten by Damien Abad (excluded from the party after being appointed Minister of Solidarity in the government of Elisabeth Borne).
