Olivia Baril: best young rider in the Tour de Suisse

Olivia Baril continued her excellent performance at the Tour de Suisse by finishing eighth in the fourth and final stage on Tuesday, a Lantsch/Lenz summit finish.

Despite her individual result since the start, the cyclist from Rouyn-Noranda went from seventh to ninth place in the final general classification. The representative of the Italian team Valcar Travel & Service nevertheless kept her white jersey as the best young rider.

In a final contested in the pouring rain, the Dutch Lucinda Brand (Trek) imposed herself in dramatic fashion, taking the stage victory and the yellow jersey from the American Kristen Faulkner (BikeExchange), who crashed in the last turn. Brand, who was four seconds behind at the start, finished the Tour with a 17-second lead over second-placed Faulkner. Her compatriot Pauliena Rooijakkers (Canyon) completed the podium.

Baril, 24, is set to sign a two-year contract with a WorldTour team, she revealed to The Press Monday. Her next destination will be Italy, where the climber will seek to acclimatize to the heat in anticipation of the Giro. She will then line up for the Tour de France.
