In the south of the Drôme, in Nyons, volunteers collected all the olives from the trees of the town so that everything is transformed into oil and that the profits are donated to a local association.
Around the middle of November, it is the peak season for harvesting olives from Nyons (Drôme). A unique and deliciously fruity taste, the 2021 vintage promises to be excellent. A real pleasure for the pickers even if it is a blow to be taken. “It’s not complicated, it’s a bit high, but you have to grab the branch and shake it”, testifies Martine Daillet, volunteer harvester. This PDO olive will be transformed into oil.
It is a paradox, but the trees in the Nyons community were not harvested for several years. For the past five years, around thirty volunteers have taken care of it. “Last year we harvested three tonnes, usually we expect 1,500 kilos”, explains Roger Viarsac, organizer of the solidarity collection. “It’s looking pretty good. Last year, the harvest was excellent, and in 2021 we should have another good harvest”, adds Simon Chianta, organizer of the Nyons and Baronnes olive union. The benefits of this solidarity collection will be donated to a local association.
