On Tuesday July 9, a major fire broke out in an olive oil factory in Saint-Christol-lès-Alès, in the Gard.
A huge plume of smoke is visible for miles near Alès. A 2,000 m² building went up in smoke on Tuesday, July 9. The fire ravaged a company that packages olive oil. A highly flammable product. Around thirty local residents were evacuated. “We were hot, there was a dull noise and an explosion. Five minutes later, there was another explosion. We got up. My daughter came, she said to me ‘daddy there’s a fire'”explains a retired couple.
The fire started at 5am on Tuesday in a storage building right next to a tanker truck. Footage was filmed by a company employee, which shows the beginning of the fire. No employees were inside, but for the plant manager, the losses will be significant. By noon, the fire was under control. Threatened by the flames and their heat, nearby gas stocks are being particularly monitored.
