Drought has negative consequences on agriculture. In southern Ardèche, olive producers are worried. The harvest promises to be particularly bad. The few olives that grow are roasted by the heat.

“There, I see a small black dot, it’s an olive that has dried up”, comments this olive producer, who is desperately looking for something to harvest from his olive trees. The sun dried out the soil, preventing the trees from growing. “I have always seen them give a few olives, and there, we have nothing”, he regrets. In the south of the Ardèche, it is everywhere the same spectacle. The few olives that come out wither and fall from the tree before they even reach maturity.

The producer could do nothing to save the 18 hectares of organic cultivation, which he was not allowed to water. He assesses the loss compared to what he envisaged at the time of flowering at 80%. Almost a white year, which he hopes to see compensated by the recognition of the state of natural disaster, paving the way for compensation. “Most French departments are in the same situation as us. Do not count on olive oil to compensate for sunflower oil from Ukraine”he warns.
