To great ills, great remedies. Faced with the scale of the destruction inflicted by Russian troops in Ukraine, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for build up “a Marshall Plan” to help rebuild the country, Wednesday, June 22.

The chancellor showed as an example the plan for the reconstruction of Europe which had been established by the United States after the Second World War, during a speech to German deputies. “Like Europe devastated by the Second World War, Ukraine today needs a Marshall Plan for its reconstruction”he said, adding that the reconstruction of the country will cost “several billion” and will spread over “several generations”.

The German official, who also recalled the extent of the support already granted to kyiv by the EU, added that this new “Marshall plan” will only be “possible only by joining forces, in collaboration with international financial organizations, with other major donor countries and with other international organizations”.

“You can see it very clearly in the ruins of the houses of Irpin”pointed out Olaf Scholz, who went with his French counterparts Emmanuel Macron and Italian Mario Draghi to the martyred city last week. “Some things reminded me of the images of German cities after the Second World War”lamented the Chancellor.

“The truth is that we are still far from negotiations between Ukraine and Russia because Putin still believes in the possibility of being able to dictate peace”, judged Olaf Scholz. He therefore invited Westerners to “stay firmly on course” support for kyiv through sanctions, financial assistance and “arms deliveries”.
