Lyon can still believe it. Thanks to a 5-2 victory at Groupama Stadium against Montpellier on Saturday 23 April, OL recovered after the disappointment suffered in Brest. Quickly in front thanks to Moussa Dembélé, the Gones were able to break on a superb free kick from Thiago Mendes. But doubts returned when the Lyonnais saw their lead melt away in stoppage time in the first period, conceding two Montpellier goals in quick succession and returning to the locker room with their heads down.

Well back on the lawn after the break, Peter Bosz’s players were able to get back to the place to dominate the second period. After several attempts including a post from Karl Toko-Ekambi, it was Houssem Aouar who found the loophole to exult a stadium with sparse stands. The Cameroonian striker ended up scoring in turn to seal the Rhone victory, before serving Aouar at the very end of the match.

The Lyonnais are only four points behind the European places before the weekend’s matches and can still hope to snatch continental competition at the end of the season. But for that, it will also be necessary to bet on possible missteps of the teams which are currently ahead of them. The only thing Lyon can do is win all their games. See you in Marseille next week.
