OJ Simpson, ex-NFL star acquitted in the “trial of the century”, is dead

Former American football superstar OJ Simpson, whose 1995 double murder trial captivated America before his acquittal, has died of cancer at the age of 76, his family announced Thursday.

“On April 10, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, died following his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren,” wrote on X the family of the man who was considered one of the first black superstars in the United States.

Former NFL star running back, converted to cinema, OJ Simpson was found not guilty of the murder in 1995 of his ex-wife and her friend in Los Angeles after the “trial of the century,” overhyped and extremely racially charged.

The debates captivated the country and the verdict exonerating OJ Simpson continues to arouse controversy, almost 30 years later.

More details will follow.
