Oilers place forward Sam Gagner on waivers

(Edmonton) The Edmonton Oilers have placed forward Sam Gagner on waivers.

The 31 other NHL teams have until Wednesday, 2 p.m., to claim it.

Gagner, who is 34 years old, is in his third stint with the Oilers. In 27 games this season, he has amassed five goals and as many assists.

The Oilers signed Gagner to a two-way, one-year contract on October 31. The contract is worth US$775,000.

He played in 18 games in November and December before being sidelined with a concussion.

He has then been used sporadically since his return, notably due to the acquisition of Corey Perry.

Since Perry’s arrival on January 22, Gagner has played only seven games.

In 1,042 career NHL games with the Oilers, Arizona Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Vancouver Canucks, Detroit Red Wings and Winnipeg Jets, Gagner amassed 197 goals and 332 assists.

He holds an Oilers record for points in a game thanks to an eight-point performance (four goals and four assists) in a game against the Chicago Blackhawks in 2012.
