Environment: oil giants targeted by several complaints
Environment: oil giants targeted by several complaints – (France 2)
Oil giants are accused of their contribution to global warming. In the United States, cities and states are filing complaints against them.
With each mobilization in favor of the climate, activists point the finger at the oil companies. This challenge is winning the courts. California Governor Gavin Newsom filed a complaint. “For decades and decades, the oil industry has made fun of all of us here”, he assured during a speech on September 20. In the United States, around forty states, cities and counties are attacking several dozen oil companies.
Oil tankers warned of risks since the 1950s
Gavin Bucklet, mayor of Annapolis, (United States) can no longer take the worsening floods. They take place 60 days per year on average. He accuses oil companies of being responsible for this damage, linked to climate change. It is based on documents which show that as early as the 1950s, oil companies were warned that the increase in carbon dioxide would be “enough to melt the ice caps and submerge New York“. In France, a criminal complaint was filed against X for manslaughter.
