Oil and Gas Sector | Climate Change Threatens Production

(Calgary) Extreme weather conditions pose increasing dangers to the oil and gas industry.

Several Canadian companies were forced this week to evacuate workers threatened by wildfires in northern Alberta. The country’s oil production was also affected by wildfires in 2016 and 2023.

Just recently, Hurricane Beryl shut down oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico in the United States.

Meteorologists warn that such events will become more frequent and more severe due to climate change.

Most oil and gas companies have contingency plans to protect their assets and employees in the event of extreme weather conditions.

However, shutting down a major production unit, even as a preventative measure, can cost a company millions of dollars a day.
