This is a world first: a plant is capable of producing hydrogen using the wind. The key is 100% green energy already used in some buses in La Roche-sur-Yon, Vendée.
La Roche-sur-Yon, in Vendée, has the first bus to run solely on energy produced by the wind. Seaside wind turbines capture the wind to transform it into hydrogen. The Lhyfe company, founded by Matthieu Guesné, produces this green hydrogen, which is completely carbon-free. “Our machines extract hydrogen from water”, explains the manager. The gas is then compressed and stored in containers before being transported to stations.
The La Roche-sur-Yon bus fills up for 700 kilometers of autonomy. On board, the vehicle is silent in addition to respecting the environment. The department of Vendée is at the origin of the project. The bus currently costs twice as much as a polluting model. But Alain Leboeuf, chairman of the department council, is aware of investing for the future. “This production unit can be duplicated throughout France and well beyond”, underlines the elected. The company is preparing a large-scale project: producing energy at sea and, ultimately, replacing oil platforms.
