After 47 years of ties, the city of Agen, in Lot-et-Garonne, decided on Monday March 28 to suspend its twinning with the Russian city Touapsé, out of solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
The municipal council of Agen (Lot-et-Garonne) decided unanimously, Monday, March 28, to cancel the twinning which linked it with a Russian city. “These thousands of small gestures will carry the same message: as long as you have this government, you will be pariahs in the community of nations”, declares the mayor of the town, Jean Dionis-du-Séjour, at the initiative of this symbolic gesture. In Agen, the inhabitants support this decision to end the twinning, in the context of the war in Ukraine.
Started in 1976, the twinning linked Agen to the city of Tuapse (Russia), a coastal city on the Black Sea. “Today we draw a line on that, it’s regrettable, but on the other hand, I understand the position of the city”, confides Jean Prouzet, president of the Agen-Touapsé twinning committee. The town hall is considering a new twinning with a Ukrainian city, destroyed by the war.
