For several weeks, the quantity of octopus harvested on the Atlantic coast has exploded. This invasion, however, is bad news for shellfish fishermen, which octopuses love.
Hens land in the nets of many fishermen on the Atlantic coast, en masse. They are nearly 7 to 10 times more numerous than last year at the same period. “There must be five tonnes in the year, here we are already at 25 tonnes”, testifies Bruno Discontigny, deputy director of the Criée de la Cotinière. The many bins filled with octopus tentacles secure juicy contracts for sellers. “This is the first time in the last 30 years”, explains Éric Rivasseau, commercial director of the Océalliance group.
However, this invasion which takes place from the south of Brittany to Charente-Maritime is also bad news for the fishermen of crustaceans, the preferred prey of octopus. Empty shells are found in the water en masse. In Glénan (Finistère), fishermen noticed the damage. “The deposit has been eaten up”, explains Frédéric Louédec, patron-fisherman. No reason is advanced for this mass proliferation.
