Vincent Fauvelle, research manager and Mathieu Ben Braham, chemist, are the guests of 19/20 info, Thursday April 4. They are reacting to the law passed to limit PFAS.

A law banning certain PFAS, from 1er January 2026, was adopted on Thursday April 4. “It’s a step in the right direction, even if we would have liked it to also include kitchen utensils and potentially other uses which are sources of exposure“, indicates Mathieu Ben Braham, chemist, scientific and regulatory mission manager for Générations Futures, guest of 19/20 info. PFAS are fluorinated substances, also called “eternal pollutants”, which are present in our daily lives: fire-fighting foam, textiles or kitchen utensil. They are persistent, but also dangerous.

Tap water is polluted

“The uses are so multiple, that obviously, we are in contact, whether through drinking water, objects that we can touch, food”, assures Vincent Fauvelle, research fellow at the Mediterranean Institute of Oceanology. Tap water is affected. Studies have demonstrated the dangerousness of certain fluorinated substances. “We have three compounds, or four, on which we have active bans, on the other hand we have several thousand PFAS which are used”develops Vincent Fauvelle.
