The elected members of the Parti Québécois (PQ), who refuse to take the oath to the British Crown, could well be deprived of sitting in the Blue Room. In a letter sent to the PQ leader, the National Assembly maintains that it intends to “apply the regulations that are in force”.
In the missive sent last Thursday to the leader of the PQ, Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, the Secretary General of the National Assembly, Siegfried Peters, clarified his intentions vis-à-vis the elected representatives of the sovereignist party, who have been hammering since 3 October that they will avoid pronouncing the oath of allegiance to the King of England, yet required to sit.
“The possibility of modifying or abolishing the oath of allegiance has already been raised in the National Assembly,” he wrote. To date, however, the National Assembly has not taken any action in this regard and it is not for me to take a decision on this subject. »
“Therefore, until the law evolves, if necessary, I have to enforce the one that is in force,” he continued.
Paul St-Pierre Plamondon asks for the support of his fellow MPs to sit in the Blue Room. One thing is certain: come what may, the elected official of Camille-Laurin will not take the oath to the Crown on Friday, during his swearing-in ceremony.
“I requested a telephone conversation with [le premier ministre] François Legault and I have written to each of the chiefs. […] I ask each party leader to give the deputies a free choice not to take the oath to the King of England, ”said Mr. St-Pierre Plamondon, Monday, from the Parliament Building in Quebec.
