The number of patients affected by Alzheimer’s will double by 2050. And their care is already inadequate, points out the General Inspectorate of Social Affairs (Igas), in a report published Tuesday, July 18. Only 5% of people with this neurodegenerative disease or a related disease are currently treated by specialized teams.

A large part of the French territory is not covered by these services. Nearly half of accommodation establishments for dependent elderly people (Ehpad) have no device dedicated to cognitive disorders, while the majority of their residents are affected. Igas therefore recommends a global transformation of all nursing homes in order to adapt to this large number of Alzheimer’s patients in the decades to come.

This care represents a major public health issue, according to this report. More than a million people are directly affected by this disease today in France, including more than one in three people aged 90.
