In France, should we fear a shortage of plants and trees among nurserymen? With the extreme heat, communities want to plant more and more trees, a problem that producers are having difficulty keeping up with. Example in Charente.

Three hundred hectares of land, half of which is used permanently to produce trees. However, this nurseryman from Charentes is unable to meet the growing demand of his customers; on his plot planted a year ago, there is almost no stock left. “The pressure is increasingly strong in terms of demand. Today, it is no longer 50%, but more than 10% of the trees remain to continue the sale, hence the gradual reduction in prices. stocks in nurseries”explains Antoine Daganaud, co-director of “Pépinières charentaises”.

Impossible to produce faster

Around twenty species are in tension and it is impossible to produce them faster, since it takes on average 10 years to grow a tree, and several days of preparation before delivery. For several years, many municipalities have invested massively in planting trees. This is particularly the case for the agglomeration of Poitiers (Vienna). “We plant trees in an approach to optimize air quality, islands of freshness, biodiversity, carbon capture, the landscape, and a certain food dimension through edible forests”specifies Vincent Pellerin, responsible for the tree heritage of Greater Poitiers (Vienna).
