Nupes deputies submit a bill against private jets

Sixty-seven deputies from the New Popular Ecological and Social Union (Nupes), 63 rebellious and four Communists, have tabled a bill aimed at banning the use of private jets within French territory, franceinfo learned on Monday September 12 from of the bearer of the text Thomas Portes. “It’s a simple device to set up”assures the deputy La France insoumise of Seine-Saint-Denis who evokes “the controversy over the PSG journey by plane to go to Nantes” and “Kylian Mbappé’s reaction”.

>> Private jets: five questions to understand why the government plans to regulate their flights

“How to explain to the French people who are suffering, and who are being asked to turn down the heating this winter when they live in thermal sieves, that billionaires take their jets for 35-minute trips? asks Thomas Portes.

“If we want a general mobilization against global warming, we must get everyone to contribute, including the ultra-rich of this country.”

“In a single hour of flight, a private jet emits up to two tonnes of CO2, the limit that each French person should emit to limit global warming below two degrees.explains the bill. While the government calls for energy sobriety, the ultra-rich continue to post a criminal carbon footprint.

In the text, left-wing MPs quote Jacques Chirac at the 2002 Earth Summit: “Our house is burning and we are looking elsewhere.” They remind the “cataclysmic scenarios” of this summer and call for “immediate measures to break with the liberal logics currently at work”.

The bill provides for a penalty of one year in prison and a fine of 150,000 euros in the event of non-compliance with the ban, increased to five years’ imprisonment and a fine of one million euros in the event of recidivism. “Obviously, we exclude anything that is of health emergency, national interest or public service”, says Thomas Portes. Action plan “aiming at the retraining of employees in the private jet sector” is also considered.
