A woman in her thirties was killed by the driver of a heavy vehicle Monday morning in Île-des-Sœurs, in Montreal.
The collision took place at an intersection of Place du Commerce, whose four lanes run alongside a shopping center. The loading truck was traveling southbound at the time of the collision, around 7:15 a.m.
“The truck made its mandatory stop,” according to Jean-Pierre Brabant, spokesperson for the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM). The collision took place when the vehicle restarted while the pedestrian was crossing Place du Commerce. His death was pronounced on the spot.
The first information suggests that the driver of the truck did not see the pedestrian when she started to cross. A bus was in the other lane, Officer Brabant said, which may have obstructed the view of the driver, a 30-year-old man who was being treated for nervous shock.
A perimeter was erected and Place du Commerce was closed in both directions so that SPVM investigators could do their job.
Some 52 pedestrians died on Quebec roads in 2021, according to the latest report from the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), a decrease compared to the annual average of 66 pedestrian deaths for the previous five years.
