A polar bear that ventured into the village of Kuujjuaq on Tuesday was shot dead in the evening.
This was announced by the Nunavik Regional Health and Social Services Board (RRSSSN) on its Facebook page, rejoicing that no one was injured. “We ask the Kuujjuamiut to be very vigilant this evening and in the coming hours, when they move around the village and on the territory,” it is also written.
According to residents speaking out on social media, the polar bear was shot less than an hour after it was initially seen.
“Polar bears in the Canadian Arctic are true predators and may consider humans as a potential food source,” we can read on the Parks Canada website. In their presence, one should “above all not find oneself in an environment without protection”.
Anyone who sees animals that could represent a danger to the community is invited to contact the local police, writes the RRSSSN.
