A two-year-old child was killed by a dog on Wednesday in a village in the Far North of Quebec.
Posted at 2:27 p.m.
This is at least the third child from Nunavik to die this way in the last decade.
“A two-year-old child was attacked by a dog in Quaqtaq and unfortunately died of his injuries,” said Jean-François Morin, of the Nunavik Police Service (SPN), the local police, by email. “The event occurred on September 14 around 4:30 p.m..”
Mr. Morin did not want to specify what type of dog it was, or if he had an owner.
“The case is being investigated by our Joint Investigation Unit and no further details will be released out of respect for the family,” he added.
Quaqtaq is a small village of approximately 400 inhabitants, with a very strong Inuit majority. Like the other 13 villages in the region, it is only accessible by plane.
The mayor of Quaqtaq did not immediately call back The Press.
Third death in 10 years
Wednesday’s little victim is at least the third child in Nunavik to die this way in the last 10 years.
In 2019, a one-year-old baby was found dead, with traces of animal bites on his body and near a pack of sled dogs, in the village of Kangiqsujuaq.
“Everyone is in shock,” said Qiallak Nappaaluk, the village mayor. “Parents tell children that they should not go near dogs, to be careful with dogs. »
In 2014, a 4-year-old girl was killed by a dog in Puvirnituq.
