(Stevens Point) Bernhard Langer won the US Senior Open on Sunday to break the PGA Tour champions career win record.
Pushing his record as the oldest winner on the 50+ tour to 65 years, 10 months, 5 days, Langer broke the tie with Hale Irwin for the number of wins with his 46e triumph.
“My mom is going to be 100 on August 4, so I think I have good genes,” Langer said. I hope I will be there for a few more years. »
With a seven-stroke lead on the back nine, Langer bogeyed the final three holes to finish with a shot-under par, at 70, and a victory two strokes better than the state favorite, Steve Stricker, on the tree-lined course with a rough green.
Langer finished the tournament with a seven-under par at 277. Only eight players finished better than par at the end of the week of competition.
Langer bettered Allen Doyle’s age record, set in 2006, at 57 years, 11 months and 14 days. He also bettered his own record for wins by a senior player, with 12.
“I never thought this would happen at the Senior Open, but I’m really excited that this record happened this week,” Langer said. It is certainly one of the best tournaments in which we participate. »
Jerry Kelly finished third with four under par, at 71.
Brett Quigley (66) and Rob Labritz (69) tied for fourth, two under par. Retief Goosen (71), Steven Alker (65) and Dicky Pride (69) went under par.
Mike Weir (75) was the top Canadian with 10 over par. The other Canadians in the tournament, McLean (73) and Stephen Ames (74), played for 12 and 16 strokes over par, respectively.
