The Court of Auditors is sounding the alarm. In its latest report, it urges the government to take decisions to ensure the electricity needs of France in the future. Today, EDF plans to build six new nuclear reactors. But according to the Court of Auditors, it would take between 25 and 30 and start their construction as soon as possible.
Currently, nuclear power represents more than 67% of French electricity production. But the government’s goal is to reduce this share to a maximum of 50% by 2035. To achieve this, the Court of Auditors recommends starting work without delay, because the current nuclear fleet is aging. France has 56 reactors spread over 18 power plants. But by 2050, most will be too old and should be closed.
