The New Anti-Capitalist Party (NPA) presidential candidate Philippe Poutou is summoned by the Paris police to be questioned as a suspect in an investigation into “public insult to a public administration”, after saying that the police was killing, the party said in a statement Monday, March 7. The NPA shares on its website a photo of a summons for a free hearing sent to Philippe Poutou by the Paris police headquarters and dated February 4, 2022.

The date of this call is not specified for the moment. The hearing was to take place on Tuesday, March 8 at 9:30 a.m. at the crime prevention brigade against the person, but the NPA indicates that it was “postponed”without having more details, while the presidential candidate finally obtained the 500 sponsorships necessary to be able to present himself, as indicated by the Constitutional Council on Monday noon.

According to the party, this summons is linked to a controversial statement by Philippe Poutou last October. Invited to comment on the remarks of a deputy La France insoumise at the town hall of Cachan on the police, the presidential candidate had hammered: “The police kill. They killed, they kill”. After this sequence, the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin announced that he was filing a complaint against him for “defend the honor of all police officers” against the words “insulting and unworthy” by Philippe Poutou.

Anti-capitalists therefore emphasize that their “official campaign begins in a way that, symbolically, says a lot: Philippe Poutou is in the sights of a power which, between the dissolutions of organizations and repeated complaints, is ready to do anything to intimidate and silence any critical voice. But we say it to Gérald Darmanin and Emmanuel Macron: we are here, and we will not be silenced!”
