It had been his goal for two years. Novak Djokovic wanted at all costs to overtake Rafael Nadal at the top of the history of men’s tennis for the number of titles in grand slam tournaments. The Serb rewrote history on Sunday by winning his 23rde major title, on the lands of Nadal, against Casper Ruud, in three sets of 7-6, 6-3 and 7-5.
Bookkeepers, observers and probably even Casper Ruud’s mother foresaw such an end. Probably not in the way however, since the first and third heats were devilishly close.
Nevertheless, Djokovic has proven that he is still the best player in the world, and above all, the greatest champion in the history of tennis.
This 23e major title comes just months after his triumph in Australia. Djokovic has played only seven tournaments this season, but he has won three of them.
The more the match progressed, the more the Serb was confident, determined and on point, in all phases of the game.
Ruud, despite a great start, died in the second run, leaving the way open to his rival. This is a third defeat in the final of a major tournament for the Norwegian.
More details to come.
