Novak Djokovic defeats Jannik Sinner to claim historic seventh ATP Masters title

The Serbian left the Italian no chance in the final (6-3, 6-3) on Sunday to win his seventh title of the season.

Powerful in service, imperial in defense, Novak Djokovic made short work of the young Italian Jannik Sinner in the final of the ATP Masters. The Serbian, world number 1, easily disposed (6-3, 6-3) of the world number 4, Sunday November 19 in Turin (Italy). With this new success, Novak Djokovic won the ATP Masters title for the seventh time, a record.

First Italian to reach a final of the “Masters Tournament”, and despite the support of a public committed to his cause, Jannik Sinner was unable to do anything. Attacked by the service of Novak Djokovic, author of seven aces in the first set, the 22-year-old player found difficult angles to play. But facing him, the Serb was on every ball, pushing his opponent to force his shots and make mistakes. As proof, put under pressure and gaining speed, Jannik Sinner only scored two points on Novak Djokovic’s serve during the first set.

In the middle of the second set, to continue to exist, Jannik Sinner took advantage of Novak Djokovic’s errors of judgment and a slightly less precise service from the Serb. The Italian fought for up to 14 minutes to keep his lead at 4-3, annoying the world number 1 in a hurry to get it over with. In vain. While he could have won the best title of his career, Jannik Sinner perhaps also paid off for the efforts of his brilliant week in Turin, where he played three matches in three tight sets.

A season with six defeats and seven titles

Author of a flawless performance until the final, the transalpine player spent a lot of time on the court: 2h30 in the semi-finals against the Russian Daniil Medvedev and in the group stage against the Dane Holger Rune, or even 3h10 against Novak Djokovic already. The world number 4 created a surprise on Tuesday by inflicting on the world number 1 his… only sixth defeat of the season, during the group stage.

In Turin, the Serb had an up and down week, leaving four sets on the way and his fate in the hands of his opponents. But by meeting his runner-up Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-final, “Nole” put the machine back in working order. This seventh ATP Masters title also marks the seventh trophy of the season for Novak Djokovic, after the Australian Open, Roland-Garros, the US Open, the Masters 1000 in Paris and Cincinnati and the Adelaide tournament. Despite his 36 years and twenty years on ATP tournaments, Novak Djokovic has not finished dominating the world circuit.
