Nova Scotia Liberals elected a new leader

(Halifax) The Nova Scotia Liberal Party has elected Zach Churchill as its new leader to replace the province’s former premier.

Posted yesterday at 10:05 p.m.

Mr Churchill won the leadership with 65% of the vote against his rival Angela Simmonds. He entered the Legislative Assembly in a 2010 by-election and served as Minister of Education and Health.

The new Yarmouth Constituency Leader thanked his community for supporting him over the past 12 years and told party members that Mrme Simmonds had shown courage in running for party leader after she was first elected last August.

Angela Simmonds received a standing ovation as Mr Churchill claimed she would be key to the party’s future, calling the lawyer and small business owner a ‘wonderful person’.

The Liberals were defeated in the provincial election last summer and leader Iain Rankin resigned in January.

“Liberals, we will rise again,” Mr Churchill said.

He denounced in a press release that the current government was breaking its promise to remedy the problems in health care and that there was no plan to deal with the shortage of workers and housing in the province.

“As a party, we can do better,” he said. As a province, we must do more to uplift our people. I am ready to take on this challenge, for all Nova Scotians. »

The party claimed it has more than 3,400 registered members who are eligible to vote, which is less than 50% of the number of members who were able to vote in the February 2021 Liberal leadership race won by Iain Rankin .
