Not easy to be “old” at La Voix

The 50-year-olds went through an arduous round at The voice Sunday night. Only one “older” candidate was fished out – at the last second and almost out of pity – by Marjo, one of the three recruits to the TVA tele-hook coaches.

This survivor of the wrinkled His name is Dominique Godin, he is 50 years old, and he works as a truck driver in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. Marjo pressed her red button as the last notes of The Trucker’s Song by Fred Pellerin resonated on the show’s magnificent set, with its modern, chic and refined look.

Dominique Godin

Before Dominique Godin, two other “seniors” had bitten the dust, France Lacombe, 58, of Roxton Falls, who took over When we give ourselves of Ginette Reno, as well as Rémy Langlois, 50, of Drummondville, who redid That I love you by Johnny Hallyday.

The pop music industry runs on youth, that’s not a reproach, it’s an observation. Proofs ? With the exception of Geneviève Jodoin, who won The voice at 41, the other seven winners of the TVA contest were all under 27. And that, the coaches know it and they hesitate to turn around when they hear a more mature range, let’s say.

After giving up his Sunday evening time slot to Star Academy for two years, the ninth edition of The voice returned to the airwaves with a nice refreshed look and three new coaches to accompany veteran Marc Dupré.

Corneille has class, you know who he is, but above all, verve and fighting spirit. He was excellent and he quickly understood the mechanics of the show.

In the middle, Mario Pelchat (and his pink Comme des Garçons t-shirt) stands out for his eloquence, his sincerity and his simplicity. He doesn’t need to show off or steppette to attract artists to his team.

Marc Dupré remains the most agile, combining punchy gags with well-balanced vulnerability. It was more difficult for the great Marjo, who seemed destabilized by the operations of seduction that she had to deliver after each performance. Restless and exalted, we felt the rocker less invested and more detached than her colleagues.

That said, the four coaches avoided the trap of hyperbole and over-buttering, which had become ridiculous in previous seasons. Well no, not all voices come down from holy heaven and vibrate like a pulse of light going through a rough diamond, frankly.

The best number of the evening was saved for the end. Montrealer Steffy Beyong, 23, dazzled the crowd on you say by American singer Lauren Daigle. The young woman was shaking like a leaf after her two minutes on stage, while Mario Pelchat, who will oversee her career in the coming weeks, wiped away tears.

Obviously, The voice would not The voice without the dramas of its participants. Brain tumor, suicide attempt, death of a father, breast cancer of the mother and domestic violence, this succession of painful events ends up making us insensitive and detached, which is probably not the initial goal of the process.

Of the 11 complete numbers that were presented on Sunday, five performers opted for English, against six who preferred French. It’s a step in the right direction, really. In particular, we were treated to Lisa LeBlanc (Hug me there) as well as to Yseult (Body) and Patricia Kaas (Miss Sings the Blues).

Also liked the sound and visual effect at the Revolution which is triggered at the start of each audition. It gives pep to the episodes.

Big little Jeremy

Intense, aggressive and overly motivated, Jérémy Demay has become the Geneviève Borne of 2023 by leaving the first Big Brother Celebritiesfollowing a loose vote.

Only Benoît Gagnon, Alexandre Despatie and Martin Larocque wanted to save the comedian and author of psychopop books. The ten others wanted to oust him. The alliance of the “after party” thus extinguished the alliance of embers and exposed the double game of comedian Coco Belliveau, who sailed, incognito, from one group to another.

Before slamming the door of the house-studio, Jérémy Demay admitted his wrongs. He has alas! wearing the mask of a confident, self-assured and quick guy, when he should have shown his bare face, without artifice, that of the real kind Jérémy. Too little, too late. Noovo’s reality show has lost its villain and, as Marie-Mai would sing, who will take his place by following in his footsteps?

It must be said: the actress Jemmy Echaquan Dubé was a poor boss. It was painful to watch her procrastinate, withdraw, and be unable to see a move or two ahead, which is the basis of this strategy game.

Sunday night’s boss’s challenge, a quiz on competitors’ habits, wasn’t the most exciting either. Soprano Natalie Choquette won it and, quite honestly, the diva doesn’t fall into the category of flamboyant, fearsome and cunning players either.

Fortunately, there are prisoner eyebrows – and loose eyelashes – of Mona de Grenoble to amuse us.
