(Oslo) Nineteen of the 20 best-selling new car models in Norway in January were electric vehicles, whose market share reached an unprecedented 83.7%, according to figures presented on Tuesday by a specialized body.

The Audi Q4 e-tron, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and BW iX, all electric models, topped the list of new registrations in the Scandinavian country last month, according to the Road Traffic Information Council (FOV). ).

The only non-fully electric car to make it into the top 20, the Toyota RAV4 — a hybrid vehicle — ranks 9and position, with 3.4% market share.

“That 19 models in the top 20 new passenger cars were electric cars is totally unique,” said OFV director Øyvind Solberg Thorsen in a statement.

Last year, these cars won a 64.5% market share in Norway and, unheard of, Tesla, the American electric specialist, even established itself as the leading manufacturer, all brands combined.

Also the largest exporter of hydrocarbons in Western Europe, Norway has set itself the ambition that all its new cars will be “zero emissions” – electric and hydrogen – from 2025.

The use of electric propulsion is considered all the more relevant there as the country derives almost all of its electricity from hydraulic dams which produce no greenhouse gas emissions.

This year, the Norwegian Association of Electric Vehicles says it expects the market share of zero-emission vehicles to exceed 80% thanks to the arrival of new models.

Unlike very heavily taxed diesel or petrol cars, electric cars are tax-free in Norway, making them comparatively cheaper to buy.

They also benefit from many advantages in Norway, even if the authorities have begun to trim some of them, such as free urban tolls or the possibility of using public transport corridors.
