Northwest Territories | Investigation begins into plane crash that left six dead and one injured

(Fort Smith) Investigators have begun searching the scene of a fatal plane crash earlier this week outside the town of Fort Smith, Northwest Territories.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) released photos from the scene showing the wreckage of the plane in a heavily wooded area. The federal agency says this type of investigation is typically completed within 15 months.

The plane, a British Aerospace Jetstream, was heading Tuesday morning to the Diavik diamond mine, northeast of the Northwest Territories capital, Yellowknife. It crashed just after takeoff, killing four passengers, mine workers, and two crew members.

The sole survivor, another minor, was airlifted to Yellowknife hospital.

The tragedy occurred near the banks of the Slave River, west of Fort Smith.

According to the TSB, shortly after takeoff, the plane struck terrain. There was a fire after impact and the plane was destroyed.
