The trucker would have tried to cross a level crossing at kilometer 526 despite the warning by intermittent lights of the imminent arrival of a locomotive, according to information available to the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) on Sunday.

“He would have realized that he didn’t have time and the front of the truck would have been caught,” said SQ spokeswoman Hélène St-Pierre.

The accident would have occurred around 12:30 p.m., but route 389 was still closed in the middle of the afternoon between kilometers 316 and 546, isolating the residents of Fermont from the rest of Quebec.

The trucker was transported to a hospital center, but there is no fear for his life, specifies the SQ.
