North Shore | Fire on board container ship finally extinguished

Almost five days after it started, the fire started on the container ship MSC Sao Paulo Voff the North Shore, is now considered extinct.

In an update published Friday, the Canadian Coast Guard indicates that the American fire teams called to intervene to control the flames have officially been demobilized.

A tugboat from Groupe Océan, the Keith Rusby, arrived on site Friday morning to provide, through a generator, the required electricity to the MSC Sao Paulo V to allow him to raise his anchor.

“Discussions are still ongoing with the vessel’s owner and other federal partners regarding next steps, including towing the vessel,” the Coast Guard said.

The icebreaker CCGS Amundsen, present since the very beginning of the operation to help rescue the ship, has been released while two other tugboats from Groupe Océan will remain on site for the moment.

“Still no trace of pollution coming from the ship has been detected,” adds the Coast Guard, specifying that an environmental intervention team will remain mobilized, on the banks of Tadoussac, until the ship leaves.

The fire that started in an auxiliary engine of the ship sparked a commotion on the North Shore at the beginning of the week. Stakeholders testified that, in their opinion, this was the largest deployment of its kind to have taken place in the sector.
