North Shore | A person hit by a police officer loses his life in Schefferville

A person died on Saturday in Schefferville, on the North Shore, after being grabbed by a police officer from the Sûreté du Québec (SQ). The Office of Independent Investigations (BEI) has opened an investigation into this matter.

The collision occurred around 1:30 a.m. early Saturday morning when a pair of police officers were traveling in a patrol car in the direction of Schefferville.

According to the BEI’s account, “a person found himself in front of the police patrol car and was hit by it.”

The victim was reportedly seriously injured before being transported to a nearby Local Community Services Center (CLSC), where he was pronounced dead.

No further details have been released at this time. Five BEI investigators were tasked with determining the exact causes and circumstances surrounding the event. The organization created in 2016 has a mandate to shed light on the facts surrounding a police intervention, particularly in all cases where a person other than a police officer on duty loses their life.

Given the circumstances surrounding this death, “the support services of a police force were required, namely the Service de police de la Ville du Québec (SPVQ)”, specified the police.
