North of Quebec | An investigation into the death of a person in custody in Inukjuak

(Inukjuak) The Bureau of Independent Investigations (BEI) is opening an investigation into an intervention by the Nunavik Police Service (NPS) and the Sûreté du Québec in connection with the death of a person who had been arrested and placed in detention in Inukjuak, in the Nord-du-Québec region.

The police would have been called, Thursday, concerning a person who knocked on the door of a residence, around 7 p.m. It was then the agents of the Sûreté du Québec who would have located the person, intoxicated, in the village.

The latter would have refused to collaborate, according to information collected by the BEI.

She would have been arrested “in connection with her state of intoxication in the public square under the terms of the municipal by-law to then be taken into custody at the Inukjuak station”, specifies the press release from the BEI.

While the person was lying in a cell, his fellow inmate reportedly expressed concerns about his condition to the guard around 10 p.m.

The officers of the Nunavik Police Service would have started resuscitation maneuvers, before transporting the person to the Inukjuak infirmary for treatment. He was pronounced dead around 10:40 p.m.

Six BEI investigators will try to shed light on the facts surrounding the police intervention. They will be assisted by the Service de police de la ville de Montréal.
