North Korea has launched a ballistic missile into the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency said on Wednesday, citing South Korea’s military staff. The launch, which comes as Seoul and Washington have stepped up defense cooperation amid rising tensions between the two Koreas, was also reported by the Japanese Coast Guard, according to Japanese news agency Kyodo.

The South Korean military said it was still analyzing the type of missile fired, according to Yonhap. The firing is the latest in a series of missile tests by Pyongyang, and comes less than a week after leader Kim Jong Un personally supervised the firing of the country’s latest intercontinental ballistic missile, the fuel-powered Hwasong-18. solid.

Talks between Pyongyang and Seoul stalled

Relations between the two Koreas are currently at one of their historic lows. Diplomatic relations between Pyongyang and Seoul have stalled and Kim Jong-un has called for accelerating the development of weapons, including tactical nuclear weapons.

Pyongyang’s posturing has multiplied in recent weeks. North Korea launched a ballistic missile in the Sea of Japan on July 12. Almost a month earlier, on June 15, it fired two short-range missiles that ended up in Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
