The Buitoni factory in Caudry, in the North, is threatened with closure after the previous health scandal which resulted in a drop in sales of its frozen pizzas. But employees and elected officials want to fight to save the site and the jobs.
To save the Buitoni factory in Caudry in the North, an entire region is mobilizing. A year ago, his frozen pizzas were at the heart of a health scandal. The factory is now threatened with permanent closure, a situation denounced by elected officials. “We want the state to be with us to force Nestlé to resume activity”declares Xavier Bertrand, LR president of the Hauts-de-France region.
Sales fell 25%
After nine months of closure and two million euros of work, the factory reopened last December. But sales of frozen pizzas have fallen 25% in one year. The factory is again shut down, and 250 jobs are threatened. “We’re not going to let go, we’re going to hang on, be all together“, says an employee. The Fraich’up range of pizzas is suspected of being the cause of the death of two children and the poisoning of more than 50 others by the E. Coli bacteria.
