North American stock markets retreated by late morning

TORONTO – The Toronto Stock Exchange retreated late Friday morning, dragged down by losses in the base metals and health care sectors, while the major US indices also lost feathers.

The Toronto floor’s S&P/TSX Composite Index returned 80.00 points to 21,212.96 points.

In New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average yielded 374.29 points to 35,739.33 points. The broader S&P 500 index fell 32.63 points to 4626.40 points, while the Nasdaq composite index lost 70.08 points to 14,736.73 points.

In the currency market, the Canadian dollar was trading at 79.69 US cents, down from its average price of 80.10 US cents the previous day.

On the New York Commodities Exchange, crude oil prices rose 71 cents to US$82.83 a barrel, while natural gas returned 5 cents to US$4.22 per million BTU.

The price of gold retreated 80 cents US to US$1,820.60 an ounce and that of copper depreciated 11 cents US to US$4.44 a pound.
