North American box office | Spider-Man: No Way Home remains in first place

Even faced with fierce competition from new movies Matrix Resurrections and Sing 2 and the rise of the Omicron variant Spider-Man: No Way Home stayed in first place over the Christmas weekend. It has also crossed the billion dollar mark internationally.

According to studio estimates, Sunday, Spider-Man: No Way Home added 81.5 million over the past weekend, down 69% from its first weekend. The Sony and Marvel film has now grossed 467 million in North American theaters, more than double the domestic revenue of the previous number one film in 2021, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Having grossed 587.1 million in 61 overseas markets, in just 12 days at the movies, Spider-Man: No Way Home grossed 1.05 billion worldwide. This is the first film released in a pandemic to cross this milestone. He is also in third place, tied with Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, for the speed with which it reached this peak, without benefiting from its release in China.

Sing 2 of Universal came in second with an estimated $ 23.8 million, while Matrix Resurrections of Warner Bros. grossed 12 million to take third place.

The animated musical Sing 2 features prominent celebrities including Matthew McConaughey, Scarlett Johansson, Reese Witherspoon and Bono, as well as a soundtrack of well-known musical hits. Since its release on Wednesday, it has grossed 41 million in North America and 65 million worldwide.

The fourth of Matrix, also released on Wednesday, earned around 22.5 million in its first five days in North America. The film, directed by Lana Wachowski and starring Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, is also currently airing on HBO Max. Globally, it has grossed 69.8 million to date.

In fourth position is The king’s man from Disney and 20th Century Studios, a prequel to the action comedy series Kingsman with Ralph Fiennes. He is slightly below expectations at 10 million in his first five days.

The fictionalized biography of Kurt Warner American Underdog, released on Christmas Day, grossed around $ 6.2 million in the past two days. Zachary Levi plays Warner, the quarterback who went from undrafted free agent to the Football Hall of Fame.

Licorice Pizza by Paul Thomas Anderson spread nationwide over Christmas, after playing in limited release for a month. He added $ 2.3 million bringing his total to $ 3.7 million.
