The song competition was won on the evening of Saturday May 11 by Switzerland. The country was supported by the artist Nemo, a 24-year-old non-binary person who proudly explains that he is neither a man nor a woman.
Nemo, an unusual artist, performed a pop opera for Switzerland in Malmö, Sweden. Nemo won Eurovision with an ode to the journey towards adopting a gender-neutral identity. A victory experienced as a surprise for this virtuoso who defines himself as a non-binary person, neither man nor woman. The choice of difference was in the spotlight on Saturday May 11 and by choosing Switzerland, Eurovision played the neutrality card. “We need more compassion, more empathy. We need to learn from each other rather than talking over each other”said Nemo Metter.
A self-taught artist
However, as the artist explains, his journey was not so simple. “This whole experience was very intense and not always pleasant. There were a lot of things that didn’t seem to be about love and unity and that saddened me a lot.”, relates Nemo. The artist turned to lyrical singing at the age of 9, then began rapping and wrote his own lyrics. In 2016, Nemo made himself known with Swiss and German rap. Her victory gave Switzerland its third Eurovision title, the last dating back to Celine Dion’s participation in 1988.
