No Way Home “, a grandiose Christmas present for generations of fans

The biggest Spider-Man buffs will argue that this Spider-Man: No Way Home is not the third but the eighth film featuring one of the world’s most popular heroes. There was first the Sam Raimi trilogy, between 2002 and 2007, then the two parts of The Amazing Spider-Man, in 2012 and 2014, before the Marvel machine made the Spider-Man part of the Avengers by entrusting the role to young Tom Holland. But beyond being the direct result of Homecoming (2017) and Far From Home (2019), No Way Home launched the crazy bet to integrate characters already seen in the previous sections. The first trailers had been dissected by millions of fans. Of the 26 films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there is hardly thatAvengers: Endgame which had aroused such enthusiasm. And the most anticipated film of this end of the year, in theaters Wednesday, December 15, should not disappoint them.

Our review does not reveal any information likely to spoil the discovery of the film.

Spider-Man: No Way Home starts where Far From Home stopped, with a shattering revelation: after his defeat, Mysterio reveals to the whole world that Spider-Man is responsible for the London catastrophe and that the hero is none other than Peter Parker. The 17-year-old high school student then finds himself tracked down by the press and the police, and his entourage suffers the full brunt of the consequences of this runaway. His girlfriend MJ and his loyal “geek” Ned are denied college admission applications on the pretext that they are close to Peter, whose opinion questions whether he is a vigilante or a criminal .

Seized with guilt, the young Avenger knocks on the door of the powerful Doctor Strange to ask him to invoke a spell to make the entire population forget his identity. But the teenager’s procrastination disrupts the procedure which ends up turning into a tragedy. Stephen Strange unwillingly opens the doors to the multiverse and several villains like Doctor Octopus come to town in search of Spider-Man. Problem: they don’t know this Peter Parker, since they come from different universes.

Without revealing the continuation of the many events which will follow one another in this dense film during nearly 2h30, it must be recognized that Spider-Man: No Way Home takes up the ambitious challenge of introducing characters already known and appreciated by the public, while preserving the proper identity of the hero played by Tom Holland in the MCU. The humor and freshness of the two previous opus are intact, despite an undoubtedly more dramatic frame. The film succeeds in the feat of making the connection with films that seemed completely disconnected in the current Marvel saga, while continuing to explore the multiverse, already introduced in the Disney + WandaVision or Loki series, to name a few.

From the excellent introductory sequence shot to the moving final, we certainly go through some very linear fighting scenes and dialogues that press a little too much on the fan service pedal, without risking going off the road. The presence of Doctor Strange (who will be showing for the second time in his own film in 2022) and his bickering with Peter Parker guarantee dizzying sequences full of rather successful special effects. And while there are many references to the previous seven Spider-Man films, No Way Home However, it remains perfectly affordable for neophyte spectators who would like to take advantage of the “hype” to dive into the world of “the friendly neighborhood spider”.

Despite its XXL cast, this 27th film of the colossal MCU therefore avoids the trap of mixing too many elements and even has the luxury of bringing a certain consistency with the first films signed by Sony. Success announced for these end-of-year celebrations, Spider-Man: No Way Home will mark its time by its ability to make the link between several generations of fans while still opening up a little more the field of possibilities for the many Marvel projects to come. Bet won for a film which falls perfectly on its (eight) legs.
