Bad news for disaster movie fans: moonfall, the new blockbuster from director Roland Emmerich, will be deprived of a theatrical release in Canada.
Shot in Montreal in 2020, this big-budget sci-fi movie hits the big screens across the United States on February 4. The film should normally have taken the poster the same day with us. But distributor Mongrel Media announced Friday that its theatrical release in Canada has been cancelled.
According to a spokeswoman for Mongrel Media, this decision was prompted by the uncertainty associated with the recent closure of theaters in Canada: “For planning reasons, decisions had to be made while theaters [du Canada] were closed,” she emailed the Newspaper.
The release date of moonfall video-on-demand in Canada has not yet been specified.
“An illogical decision”
As they prepare to reopen their doors next week, the owners of Quebec cinemas are sorry not to be able to integrate moonfall to their programming.
“We are disappointed to learn that the distributor of the film moonfall has not planned a theatrical release in Canada,” wrote the Newspaper Daniel Séguin, Senior Vice President of National Operations at Cineplex.
The same goes for the president of Cinémas Guzzo, Vincent Guzzo, who didn’t hesitate to describe the film’s marketing strategy in Canada as illogical.
Remember that director Roland Emmerich loves Montreal. moonfall is his fifth film to have been shot in the Quebec metropolis.
