While Grenoble has just been designated European green capital, the environmentalist presidential candidate has chosen to go there on January 13th. Promising to be inspired by the results of the eco-friendly mayor Éric Piolle, Yannick Jadot notably affirmed that the city was committed to ” 100% local renewable energy by the end of the year “.

Does this mean that Grenoble homes will only consume green, locally produced electricity? Not really. In 2018, the company Gaz Électricité de Grenoble (GEG) presented a plan to cover by 2022 the equivalent of the consumption of the 166,000 Grenoble residents solely in renewable energies. Today, the company supplies about a quarter of green energy to the city.

But that does not mean that green electricity will be produced locally. GEG will rely on sites dispatched throughout the territory, in particular wind farms in Picardy or New Aquitaine. Moreover, it is misleading to suggest that only Grenoble will be supplied with this electricity. The semi-public company indeed sells green energy elsewhere in the region, and even everywhere in France.

In summary, GEG hopes to produce in 2022 the equivalent in green energy of the consumption of Grenoble residents. This does not mean that this electricity will be produced locally. Nor restricted to city dwellers.
